Senol Zorlu - research and inspiration

When I was researching portrait photographers last year, the work of Senol Zorlu stuck out along with the work of Steve Mc curry.  I feel that their work has much more depth and am able to relate more to their work probably because it has an culture embedded in it.

Senol Zolu's work is in colour but his photographs are all based with rich earth tones giving the photo a beautiful but unique finish which seems to symbolise his style.  The tones and colours of the photograph enhance the ethnic culture whilst the outdoor background creates more depth and gives it the image more meaning.  When I studied the work of this photographer it inspired me to take photographs using the outdoors as a background with natural light to give it more of a natural ethnic feel.

Şenol Zorlu is a Turkish photographer living and working in Germany, who seems to be one of those elusive types. In the photographs you’ll note the pink lines going through the photographs. This is a way for the photographer to maintain ownership of his work.  He is a photographer and researcher for street children at the PH (?) in Heidelberg. He seeks to explore ethnographical photography on the base of scientific research methods.

Steve Mc Curry - research and inspiration

I researched the work of Steve McCurry in 2013 and again it was one of the portrait photographers that I was inspired by.  Steve incorporates bold colours in his images and uses backgrounds to help reflect culture.  The image of the girl draws a persons attention to her piercing eyes whilst her clothing strongly defines her Asian ethnicity which combines makes the image more interesting.

Again the bold colours and the traditional clothes work well against the colours of the background in the above photo.

book - research and inspiration

I liked the idea and images in this book as it is similar to that of the work of Steve McCurry, the images aren't as striking as portraits but the background again encompasses culture giving more information on the places visited as well as the person in the image.

book research and inspiration

This book has some great portraits but the interesting thing is that they don't all follow a certain style and still look great.  The images range from just head and shoulder studio shots to outdoor shots with background to create a scene that tells a story with the image.

book research and inspiration

Book by Jaoek Edwin of 126 'street portraits', which are basically images of unknown people which have been taken on the streets of Poland.  I like the idea of this concept as it is similar to street photography but focuses in on individuals to create a portrait.  I did attempt this during my recent visit to Turkey but didn't feel comfortable getting very close to some of the individuals without gaining their consent.

Photographer research

One of the most popular Asian photographers based in the North East is Shahed, based in Newcastle, he has changed his site to read "luxury wedding photographer", which reflects his prices.  Shahed's photography has taken him to different countries and he has also been mentioned on other sites as can be seen below, however, when I was following him on Facebook I felt that he shared very little of his own images, in fact, he was just sharing other people's general posts like everyone else.

Literature

Below are samples of some of the books I have bought on Kindle for advice and guidance on wedding photography and making money.  All of which contain useful tips and ideas.
